Couple therapy for Intercultural Couples

Are you experiencing a difficult time or conflict in your couple relationship? Are you thinking about seeking couple therapy to address these issues?

We are looking for intercultural couples, who are willing to attend couple therapy as part of a research study. Our research broadly focuses on couple cohesion and satisfaction amongst intercultural couples in the U.K.

The Institute of Family Therapy is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. It provides systemic therapy training and low cost therapy for couples and families. This is an opportunity to access couple therapy as part of a larger European study in conjunction with another London organisation, the London Intercultural Couples centre.

Participants will engage in couple sessions at a discounted cost with the therapists. Sessions will last approximately 1-1 ½ hours. They will be recorded on DVD and transcribed as required by the research study. Six sessions will be provided at a rate of £38 per session after which couples will be signposted to other services or by agreement remain with the designated therapist at a rate of £50 per session.

There are many ways to define an intercultural couple. For the purposes of this study, we are looking for intercultural couples where one partner is from the West (U.S, Europe, the U.K and Australia) and the other is a migrant from Asia, Africa or Latin America. The migrant partner should have arrived in the U.K after the age of 12 and you need to have been cohabiting for at least a year.

If you and your partner meet these criteria and would like to participate in our research and receive couple therapy, email Robyn Bradley, Clinical Administrator, quoting cross-cultural couple research.  Therapy sessions will be available on Thursday evenings from 6.00 to 8.00p.m.

Sessions will be treated confidentially unless there is any statement of disclosure of any significant risk of harm to self or others. In such an instance the therapist may need to alert other agencies such as GP or Social Care.

If you would like to participate or simply to receive further information, you can email us at the address below. If you know someone else who may be interested in participating, please encourage them to contact us.

Thank you
